Eden Place Nature Center offers a range of nature-based educational field trips for visiting school and community groups. Please review our program options and terms of agreement below.

Field Trip Programs offered
The World of the Monarch Butterfly (PreK- 5) (BOOK NOW!)
Learn all about the adventures of the Monarchh Butterfly! Discuss the life cycle of the monarch, make a butterfly related craft, and tend to the plants that provide food and habitat for the monarch. Finally, see if you have what it takes to complete the international monarch migration! (90 mins.) Let's Make Dirt (K- 5) (BOOK NOW!) Help us make compost that will provide food for the plants at Eden Place! Learn about the necessary components of compost, help prepare green and brown material to put in our compost bin, then explore the bin for all of the decomposers that will help turn that plant material into dirt. (90 mins.) Basic Farming (PreK- 5) (BOOK NOW!) Become a farmer for a day as you learn all about our food system and growing food on a farm! Help tend to our chickens and ducks, prepare a field for planting, and then sow some seeds in your farm field. End your visit with a taste of some fresh produce grown at Eden Place. (90 mins.) BUGS, BUGS, BUGS (PreK- 5) (BOOK NOW!) Eden Place is home to a wide range of insects. Spend your visit learning about local insects and the role that they play in our ecosystem. Learn to identify some common beneficial insects and garden pests, then help with all-natural pest control to protect our plants. Finally, conduct an insect scavenger hunt and use a microscope to examine the creatures you find! (90 mins.) |
Chicago Indians (K- 5) (BOOK NOW!)
The Chicago region used to be home to a number of Native American tribes. Spend time with a special guest who will transport you to the culture of a local tribe. Participate in traditional Native American music and games, then relax in our wigwam as you hear local stories and folk lore. (90 mins.) What's For Dinner? Predator vs. Prey (K- 5) (BOOK NOW!) What is a predator? What is prey? Meet examples of each, and learn about the exciting world of hunters and the hunted in the animal kingdom. Students will have fun discovering that each animal is either a predator, prey or both. (90 mins.) Wonderful World of Wigglers (K- 5) (BOOK NOW!) Explore the world of vermiculture, or raising worms to produce compost for the garden! Learn all about what our worms need to stay happy and healthy, and look for egg capsules in our bin. Participate in a worm race, and finally make your own worm bin to take home or to school. (90 mins.) Customized Program (K-5) (BOOK NOW!) Work with our education staff to customize a program that will meet your curriculum goals using the wetland, prairie, community garden, and urban farm resources at Eden Place! Terms of Agreement
Adult Chaperones
We require one adult for every five children in grades Pre-K- 2, and one adult for every eight children in grades 3 - 12. Educators are included in these ratios. We accept a maximum of 40 students per class.
Reservations
Availability for programs is limited and advance registration is required for all of our exhibitions and programs. Field trip visits may be scheduled up to one year in advance, but reservations are not accepted less than 7 days prior to visit.
Program Availability
Classes are offered only one time per day, and some programs are limited by season. In the case that a requested program is not available in the desired month, we will work with you to provide other program options.
Admission Prices
Each field trip will cost $7 per child. Payment is due 30 days in advance of your visit, or with your registration form if your visit is less than 30 days away.

Checks should be made payable to "Eden Place" and sent to Eden Place Nature Center, School Reservations Office, 4417 S. Stewart, Chicago, IL, 60609.
Lunch at Eden Place
Reservations for seated picnic space are required, but grass seating is always open whether you bring your own lunches or order in lunch through Eden Place Nature Center. Reservations are available Tuesday through Friday. Space is limited and requests are filled in the order in which they are received. Confirmation of scheduled lunch time and information for purchasing lunch will appear in your confirmation kit.
